Fiss, Serfaus and Ladis

Relatively unknown to the UK market, the pretty resort of Fiss is located between Serfaus on one side and Ladis on the other. The resort is attractive, with an up market feel and low-rise with much the accommodation in Fiss being apartments and a few catered chalets. Both Serfaus and Ladis have a bigger proportion of hotel and B and B accommodation than Fiss. Most accommodation here a short distance from either the ski pistes or the ski lift station. There are a number of restaurants in Fiss, although there is a bigger selection in Serfaus.

The central location of Fiss means that it is ideally placed for ski trips to either the Ladis ski area or the far bigger Serfaus ski region. All ski areas are included on the same ski pass. Fiss is possibly less of an evening-out resort than say Serfaus, partly due to the fact that much of the accommodation is apartment based. That said, it has one of the best après ski bars in the whole area, the Hexenalm, which resonates to après ski chaos until early evening. Surprisingly it then closes and reopens an hour or so later as a restaurant.

Fiss and the ski holiday area that it shares with Serfaus and Ladis is one of the best intermediate ski areas in Austria and beyond, whilst the child facilities make it one of the better family ski holiday resorts in the entire Alps. The ski area is extensive and spreads in both directions from Fiss which is basically the central ski holiday resort in the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski region. Towards Ladis the skiing is gentle with a long gentle ski piste connecting Ladis and Fiss and passes by several kids skiing features / themed parks and a couple of mountain huts. Above Fiss the ski lifts take 2 directions, one is into the top point of the Fiss area and the skiing that takes place in the next valley, the other direction is toward Serfaus. In all over 200km of groomed pistes and a choice of off piste options, all on spectacular slopes surrounded by the picturesque Samnaum and Otzal mountains.

Serfaus peaks at just over 9000 ft and is the other side of the better known resort of Ischgl. The village quintessentially offers a typical Tyrolean tone with a pretty church, wooden chalets and parochial feel. The longest ski run is around 10km and there are heated lifts. It's a paradise on the snow for children with fantastic learning facilities, some of the best we have seen in Europe and all kids just seem to love being there.Nursery slopes are well organised and there is all day child care.Check out the Kinderschneealm which is a childrens mecca on the snow with merry go round, slides, zip wires, skyswing and a climbing frame. The Ski Lounge is also a must visit mountain restaurant where ski boots are swapped for slippers and the toilets must be the best in Europe!!Definitely a quite superb family ski area with good accommodation, great snow and at prices you will like!Smiling smugly means you have chosen well here and as Arnie says..."you will be back"!!
