Not far from Zell am Zee, in the Hochkönig-Skischaukel area, Maria Alm is quite stunning and has won awards for its good looks. Its church is famous, too – it has the second highest spire in Salzburgerland. Maria Alm is part of a little-known but quite idyllic circuit of resorts – taking in Saalfelden, Hinterthal, Hintermoos, Dienten and Mühlbach – all of which can be skied on the same lift pass as part of the Ski Amadé ski region which has access to 860km of piste, 270 lifts and 25 resorts.

Hochkonigs Winterreich has over 150 kilometres of ski runs and nearly 130 kilometres of cross country trails. Most of the slopes are suitable for beginners to advanced skiers. This is not an area where the real adrenalin junkies though find their salvation though. Hochkonig is also part of the Ski Amade region, giving you access to more than 850 kilometres of slopes in the surrounding areas such as the Salzburg Sports, Dachstein Tauern, Schladming and Grossartal. This rivals anything in France for the sheer size and  of ski area on one ski pass.approximately 350km of pistes are interconnected with the rest accessed by the free buses.
