Passo Tonale sits on the pass linking the regions of Trentino and Lombardy. It’s got a compact lift system with little to no queuing, even at peak times and most of its hotels are within easy reach of the lifts. As it is a high resort its snowsure slopes run mainly above the tree line and get long hours of sunshine. Its runs aren't the longest in Europe and many are blue runs, with little gradient, so they’re ideal for children learning to ski, as well as all beginners, who want to ensure they have a real winter experience without wondering where to go worrying the next turn might be onto a black run. Thus its great for nervous skiers too but less of a good choice for groups of advanced skiers.
The town itself is purpose built, so it isn't as picturesque as some of its neighbours, but it’s friendly and lively, with a great selection of bars, restaurants and shops. The prices are relatively inexpensive and a veritable bargain compared to France. For those booking the area pass you can have a day on the slopes in neighbouring pretty and classy Madonna di Campiglio too, which is highly recommended.
