Sestriere Ski Resort sits on a broad, sunny and windy plateau. Though an excellent family choice neither the site nor the village, with its rows of apartment blocks, looks very welcoming, so don’t choose here for a pretty base to explore the Milky Way from. The satellite area of Borgata, though offers a gentle blue run to the east and 100m lower, is quiet and more traditional in style. The village is not huge and some accommodations are very close to the snow, but a number are quite distant from the lifts, or the bars. There are few free buses though some of the hotels offer a shuttle service. Borgata has its lifts at one end, at the foot of the piste from Sestriere. The slopes give extensive views across the part-wooded Milky Way to the peaks of the French border. There are some very good accommodation options though, mainly centering around hotels.

The Italian part of the Milky Way generally gets good snowfalls, but Sestriere also has extensive snowmaking, ensuring skiing even in a poor snow season, so you can count on good cover on the pistes.Grooming of the pistes is both ‘comprehensive’, and ‘excellent’. If sending anyone for tuition there are four schools. The two main schools have mini-clubs for children aged three and four and offer lessons for children from the age of five.

Sestriere is high, with north-west-facing slopes and we do get good feedback from here.

The local slopes, served by drag lifts and chairs, are in two main areas. There is Sises, directly in front of the village and Motta, above Borgata. Motta is more varied and bigger, with more vertical. From the village a gondola goes up over the opposite mountainside to M Fraiteve, for access to Sauze d’Oulx, Sansicario and the rest of the Milky Way. There are blue runs back from M Fraiteve – sunny, and not difficult so can be attacked by anyone but late season the runs may get a tad soggy.
