Vail Ski Resort, Colorado

Vail lays claim to be the number one ski resort in America. Other than its excellent accommodation facilities, the ski pass offers the biggest ski area experience in the USA, (together with Lake Tahoe, Whistler and Utah) rivalling in size the major French ski areas. On one lift pass, you can ski not only Vail and Beaver Creek but Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin as well (plus Northstar,Heavenly,Kirkwood and also now Verbier,Lech and St Anton) on the Epic Pass). That’s over 1000 km of America skiing... albeit interspersed and not interconnected. Vail itself boasts the legendary back bowls, including the terrific terrain of Blue Sky Basin, Steep and Deep, Lovers Leap and Pete's Bowl. Just over 7 miles wide and one mile deep, Vail is home to some of the famous champagne powder, not to mention miles upon miles of superb runs on the front side of the mountain, from the long, cruising and often groomed runs of Avanti and Born Free, through to the steep moguls of Highline and the black run of Riva Ridge. The cruise on a groomed blue run, on a wide piste, between the trees, with few people around you, typifies skiing in America. It’s just fantastic for your confidence.

Accommodations in Vail range from superb hotels such as the Sonnenalp or Sebastian and apartments or catered chalets, for your ski holiday and each of these options take care of almost any the budget and groups sizes. You can also check out the views from Two Elk restaurant, perhaps the largest mountain eatery in the world and certainly one of the highest. Nearby Beaver Creek, is the ideal venue for those who enjoy intermediate cruising days out and sampling the steep runs of the Birds of Prey men’s downhill run, or the bumps on Grouse Mountain. It’s also a boarder’s paradise.

Vail village is a large attractive Bavarian style pedestrian resort, offering over 200 shops, bars and restaurants to satisfy every appetite from sushi to gourmet dining. Bridge Street is the main hubbub of activity where day or night, there is always something happening, though right by the new ice rink the nightlife can be lively. Pop in to the Red Lion for a spot of après ski. Watch the skiers come down the International run, both with and without skis, from the comfort of Los Amigos deck with one of their superb Margharitas.Gawp at the world going by from the Pendulum bar terrace or just share drinks at the excellent Vendetta bar. Check out Lancelots for early bird options or chill out in the excellent Amri Res, a true Austrian bar and restaurant by the fountain. The list is endless.
